Rocket-serving Mpetshi Perricard rips past Nishioka to reach third round

French lucky loser Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard advanced to the third round by surging past Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 on Thursday at Wimbledon. The man who fired 51 aces past Sebastian Korda in a five-set victory in the first-round delivered another 27 on Thursday as he cracked 50 winners and saved the only two break points he faced.
He didn’t just win, he raced. Mpetshi Perricard got through his a best-of-five victory in 71 minutes.
Mpetshi Perricard, ranked No 58, had never won a match at a major prior to this week. He will play the winner of the match between Finn Emil Ruusuvuori and Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 11 seed, next.
The Lyon native won 40 of 45 first-serve points and won 27 of his 65 service points via the ace. He has a total of 78 for the tournament.
In the previous round of The Championships, the 20-year-old Frenchman won against American Sebastian Korda, the No 20 seed (7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6), 6-7 (4), 6-3).
Nishioka, ranked No 90, won against Portuguese Nuno Borges (6-2, 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-3) in the previous round of The Championships.
