Wimbledon: Safiullin through to third round

Russian Roman Safiullin moved into the third round of Wimbledon by beating Tomas Machac 6-2, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Thursday afternoon.

44th-ranked Safiullin, a quarter-finalist last year at Wimbledon, will play Frenchman Arthur Fils next.

The Russian improved to 6-1 lifetime in main draw matches at SW19.

Ahead of his victory, the Russian produced a stunning comeback to beat Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 26 seed (6-7 (5), 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4).

Machac, ranked No 39, overturned the situation against Belgian lucky loser David Goffin (3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-6 (5)) in the previous round of The Championships.
