Wimbledon: Monfils through to third round, beats Wawrinka

Frenchman Gael Monfils moved into the third round of Wimbledon by winning against Swiss Stan Wawrinka 7-6 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (3) at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Thursday.

Monfils won 85 percent of points at the net against Wawrinka, with athleticism defying age for the French veteran.

“Come to the net, it’s something that I’m trying to do a little bit more often,” explained Monfils. “But is not also a big strategy for me. I don’t feel the game at the net. It’s the feeling that you need to have.”

Monfils, ranked No 33, will play the winner of the match between Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 10 seed, and Chinese Juncheng Shang next.

Ahead of his victory, the 37-year-old Frenchman edged out No 22 seed Adrian Mannarino (6-4, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4).

Wawrinka, ranked No 95, defeated wildcard Charles Broom (6-3, 7-5, 6-4) in the previous round of The Championships.
