Birmingham Open: Putintseva beats Cocciaretto to reach final
The Kazakh will face the winner of the match between Australian Ajla Tomljanovic and Russian Anastasia Potapova, the No 7 seed, in the final
Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva defeated Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the final of the Birmingham Open at Edgbaston Priory Club on Saturday.
Putintseva, ranked No 41, will face the winner of the match between Australian Ajla Tomljanovic and Russian Anastasia Potapova, the No 7 seed, next.
This will be the sixth WTA Tour final for Putintseva and her first since Astana in 2021.
Ahead of her win today, the Kazakh won against Frenchwoman Clara Burel (6-3, 6-4), Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina (6-3, 6-0) and American lucky loser Caroline Dolehide (6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-1).
Cocciaretto, ranked No 44, beat Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the top seed (6-3, 6-3), American wildcard Sloane Stephens (6-4, 6-2) and Russian Diana Shnaider (5-7, 6-4, 6-2) in the previous rounds of the Birmingham tournament.
The Italian took a medical timeout late in the first set to treat an injury.
