Andy Murray pulls out of Queen’s with back injury, faces race to be fit for final Wimbledon
Jordan Thompson benefited from the abandonment of Andy Murray (4-1) on Wednesday evening and will face the winner of the match between Canadian Milos Raonic and American Taylor Fritz, the No 4 seed, in the next round
Andy Murray suffered a major scare ahead of what is likely to be his last Wimbledon after he suffered a back injury at Queen’s Club on Wednesday.
The 37-year-old, a five-time champion at Queen’s and a two-time Wimbledon champion, appeared to suffer the issue right at the beginning of his second-round match with Jordan Thompson.
Murray had treatment to his lower back early on but then pulled out at 4-1 down, seemingly telling Thompson that “my back locked” as he quit. The Scot, who had a metal hip inserted in 2019, has said this is likely to be his last Wimbledon and that he’s unlikely to play on much after the summer.
Thompson advances to the quarter-finals, where he will play Milos Raonic or Taylor Fritz. The Aussie beat Dane Holger Rune, the No 7 seed (4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3) ahead of his victory.
In the previous round of the Queen’s tournament, Andy Murray, defeated Australian qualifier Alexei Popyrin (6-3, 3-6, 6-3).
