Italian wildcard Giorgia Pedone moved into the last 16 of the Veneto Open promoted by Regione del Veneto when American Hailey Baptiste, the No 6 seed, retired on Tuesday afternoon.
Pedone, ranked No 307, led 6-1, 1-0 when Baptiste, ranked No 96, pulled out on Tuesday.
The 19-year-old Italian will face the winner of the match between Filipino Alexandra Eala and Frenchwoman Carole Monnet next.
