Andy Murray wins on return from injury in Bordeaux Challenger

Andy Murray celebrated his 37th birthday with a win on his return from injury as he reached the second round of the Bordeaux Challenger event on Wednesday.

Playing for the first time since he damaged ankle ligaments in Miami in March, the former world No 1 was leading Kyrian Jacquet of France 7-5, 2-0 when his opponent retired. He will play another Frenchman, Gregoire Barrere, next.

Murray gained the vital break in the 11th game of the opening set before closing it out 7-5 and then broke immediately at the start of the second before Jacquet pulled out.

Murray has said that he is unlikely to play on much past this summer, having battled back brilliantly from having a metal hip inserted in 2019 but found it hard to get back toward the top of the sport.

The Scot is due to play in the Gonet Geneva Open next week before competing at the French Open.
