Australian qualifier Olivia Gadecki reached the last 16 of the Trophée Clarins when American Sloane Stephens, the No 3 seed, retired on Wednesday.
Gadecki, ranked No 168, led 6-1, 3-2 when Stephens, ranked No 35, pulled out on Wednesday afternoon.
The 22-year-old Australian will face Frenchwoman Alize Cornet next.
