Hubert Hurkacz edged out Sebastian Baez 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 on Tuesday afternoon. He’ll play the winner of the match between American Tommy Paul, the No 14 seed, and Russian Daniil Medvedev, the second seed, in the next round
Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 7 seed, reached the quarter-finals of the Rome Masters by edging out Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 17 seed, 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 at the Foro Italico in Rome on Tuesday afternoon.
He has now reached the quarter-finals of all nine ATP Masters 1000 events – the 11th active player to do so.
This win over Baez – this season’s ATP win leader on clay (17 matches, two titles) – is only his second win on the surface over a player ranked in the Top 20.
Hurkacz, ranked No 9, will play the winner of the match between American Tommy Paul, the No 14 seed, and Russian Daniil Medvedev, the second seed, next.
In the previous rounds of the Italian Open, the Pole beat Spaniard Rafael Nadal (6-1, 6-3) and Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the No 25 seed (7-6 (7), 6-2).
Baez, ranked No 19, won against Serb Dusan Lajovic (7-6 (3), 7-6 (6)) and Dane Holger Rune, the No 10 seed (2-6, 6-2, 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
