Rome Masters: Holder Medvedev battles into last 16

Defending champion Russian Daniil Medvedev, the second seed, edged out Serb qualifier Hamad Medjedovic 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-5 to reach the last 16 of the Rome Masters at the Foro Italico in Rome on Monday evening.

Medvedev, ranked No 4, will face American Tommy Paul, the No 14 seed, next.

The Russian won against Jack Draper (7-5, 6-4) ahead of his victory.

Earlier in the tournament, Medjedovic, ranked No 121, beat Australian Alexei Popyrin (6-3, 6-2) and Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the No 30 seed (7-6 (4), 6-4).
