Andy Murray switches to Yonex racquets, still searching for something extra in last phase of his career

It remains to be seen how long Andy Murray continues to play on the Tour – he has said it’s unlikely to be much past the summer – but no one could ever accuse the former world No 1 of just playing out a farewell Tour.

After photos emerged of Murray carrying a Yonex racquet bag at the Challenger Tour event in Bordeaux, his team confirmed that the Scot, who turns 37 on Wednesday, is indeed testing out a new Yonex, which he intends to use this week, and potentially, beyond.

It’s a big move at any stage of a player’s career. Murray’s played with Head throughout his career and finding a racquet he likes and making it work from the first match on is no easy task.

But yet again, in perhaps his final months on Tour, the three-time Grand Slam winner is still willing to push himself, desperate to find that extra 1 or 2 percent that can turn tough losses into satisfying wins.

Murray had career-saving hip surgery in 2019 but though he continues to defy doctors’ expectations by even being on Tour, he has struggled to get his ranking back up where he knows he belongs, a task not helped by the ankle ligament injury he suffered in Miami in March.

Now ranked 77, Murray is due to play in the Gonet Geneva Open next week, and then at the French Open, where he will also partner Dan Evans in the doubles, perhaps a precursor to a partnership for the Olympics later this summer.
