Dominic Thiem confirms he will retire at end of 2024

The former US Open champion said his wrist was “not where it needs to be”

Former US Open champion Dominic Thiem announced on Friday that 2024 will be his final year on Tour.

The 30-year-old Austrian, who won at Flushing Meadows in 2020, said his right wrist injury, which has affected him in recent years, was not where it needed to be to continue.

“Firstly, my wrist is not exactly the way it should be and it’s not exactly the way how I want it,” Thiem said in a video on Instagram. “And the second reason is my inner feeling. I was thinking about this decision for a very long time. I was thinking very carefully about it.

“I was also thinking about the whole journey as a tennis player which was incredible. I’ve had success, I’ve won trophies I never dreamed of. The journey was incredible, all the ups and downs, it was an incredible experience which I am so thankful for.

“But at the end, I came to the conclusion that this decision to end my career at the end of the season was the only right one. I’m very happy with it and I’m super-excited for everything that’s coming next.”

Thiem unable to reclaim former glories

Thiem reached three Grand Slam finals – twice at Roland-Garros and once at the Australian Open – before finally claiming his first Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2020, when came from two sets down to beat Alexander Zverev in the final.

In the immediate aftermath of that victory, Thiem lost some of his motivation, having achieved a lifelong dream by winning one of the sport’s biggest titles.

But it was the wrist injury he first suffered in Mallorca in June 2021 that really set his career back. From then on, Thiem struggled to regain his top form, his wrist never quite as strong as it had been and he has slipped down the rankings to his present mark of No 117.

Earlier this year, the 30-year-old said he had stopped comparing himself to the way he used to be. On Friday, he confirmed that this will be his last year.
