Carlos Alcaraz has confirmed he will miss Rome next week due to an arm injury.

The Spaniard lost in the quarter-finals of Madrid to Andrey Rublev, during which his arm was heavily strapped, and admitted afterwards he was experiencing soreness after two consecutive three-set matches – with a gruelling round-of-16 encounter with Jan-Lennard Struff taking a toll.

He said after the loss to Rublev that he felt something in his forearm – and on Friday he confirmed on social media that it is this problem that will keep him out of the next Masters 1000 event on the calendar.

“I felt pain after playing in Madrid, discomfort in my arm,” he wrote in Spanish on Twitter. “Today I had some tests and I have muscle edema [a type of fluid swelling] in the pronator teres, a consequence of my last injury. Unfortunately I won’t be able to play in Rome. I need rest to recover and be able to play 100% pain-free.”

Alcaraz missed the start of the clay season with an arm injury he suffered in the warm-up for Monte-Carlo, which also ruled him out of Barcelona.

He had initially suggested he hoped he would have enough time to recover and play in Rome.
