Rublev snaps losing streak with victory over Bagnis in Madrid

Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 7 seed, snapped a four-match losing streak as he advanced to the third round of the Madrid Masters by winning against Argentinian qualifier Facundo Bagnis 6-1, 6-4 at the Caja Magica on Friday.

Rublev, ranked No 8, will face the winner of the match between Chinese wildcard Juncheng Shang and Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the No 27 seed, next.

It is the Russian’s first win on clay this year and his first of any kind since Indian Wells.

“I don’t know, since the beginning of the week, I was feeling I was practising well, feeling more relaxed,” Rublev said. “I was feeling that OK, maybe I felt I could win a match, finally, and it happened.”

Bagnis, ranked No 136, defeated American qualifier Brandon Nakashima (6-3, 7-6 (5)) in the previous round of the Madrid tournament.
