Indian Wells: Quinn, Townsend among eight Americans to qualify for main draw

Americans Ethan Quinn and Taylor Townsend were among eight Americans who booked their spots in the BNP Paribas Open main draw after coming through the qualifying draw on Tuesday.

2023 NCAA singles champion Quinn defeated Italian Andrea Vavassori 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 to become one of three American men to qualify this year; with Nicolas Moreno De Alboran and Denis Kudla joining him. The 19-year-old Quinn will be making his ATP Masters 1000 main draw debut and will take on wildcard Patrick Kypson in the first round.

Two other rising youngsters on the men’s side, 19-year-old Juncheng Shang, from China, and 20-year-old Shintaro Mochizuki, from Japan, also qualified. Shang defeated Argentine Facundo Bagnis 6-2, 7-5 to qualify for the second time in three years while Mochizuki beat German Benjamin Hassan 6-4, 7-6(4) to punch his ticket in the 96-player main draw.

Among the veterans, former top 10 players David Goffin and Lucas Pouille moved into the main draw. Goffin defeated Italian Luca Nardi 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-4 ad Pouille overcame fellow Frenchman Harold Mayot 0-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Goffin will take on former world No 1 and three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray in a battle of veterans.

American teens Montgomery and Hovde join Townsend in main draw

On the women’s side, Taylor Townsend defeated 17-year-old fellow American Clervie Ngounoue 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 to book her spot into the main draw. Townsend, who is one of seven moms in the main draw, was joined by two American teens as qualifiers.

2021 US Open junior winner Robin Montgomery defeated Australia’s Storm Hunter 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 while 2022 Wimbledon junior champion Liv Hovde, who is only 18, eased past Great Britain’s Harriet Dart, 6-2, 6-3. Americans Bernarda Pera and Hailey Baptiste also qualified for the main draw.

Former French Open runner-up Sara Errani will also feature in the main draw after the 36-year-old defeated Australia’s Arina Rodionova.6-4, 6-0 to book her spot in the main draw. She will meet four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka in the opening round.
