San Diego Open: Fernandez forced to retire after winning first set
Leylah Fernandez was forced to retire at 7-6 (7), 0-4 on Tuesday night, with Tatjan Maria progressing to play Daria Saville in the next round

German Tatjana Maria reached the second round of the San Diego Open when Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 8 seed, retired at the Barnes Tennis Center on Tuesday night.
Maria, ranked No 47, was ahead in the second set with the score at 6-7 (7), 4-0 when Fernandez, ranked No 32, was forced to retire due to a left shoulder issue.
The 36-year-old German will face Australian qualifier Daria Saville next.
