“Vamos, ATP Tour!” Andy Murray calls for South American swing and Masters
The former world No 1 has called on the ATP to tweak its calendar
Andy Murray – never short of an opinion – has expressed what he describes as an “unpopular” one, and called for South America to have its own dedicated swing with a Masters 1000 event.
“South America should have its own dedicated swing on the tennis tour with its own Masters series. The way the fans support the tournaments there is incredible. Amazing atmospheres and is clearly part of their sporting culture. Vamos ATP Tour!” he wrote on X.
The 36-year-old – about to begin his campaign in Dubai – was clearly enjoying watching fellow Brit Cameron Norrie in semi-final action in Rio.
That is a city in which Murray has enjoyed success himself, winning the second of his Olympic gold medals there.
Murray may have more influence than a standard X user as he has been a longstanding member of the ATP Player Council, serving from 2016 to 2018 and again between 2020 and 2022.
One South American star, at least, agrees with him. Diego Schwartzman of Argentina replied: “Let ATP Tour know this Andy! Every year they [give] us less support. Not just because of how the fans support the tournaments. Also how many players we have and we had on the top as [you] know. We deserve more than this from ATP.”
