When will the 2024 Indian Wells Masters take place?

The BNP Paribas Open, which is also known as the Indian Wells Masters, will be held from March 3 to 17, 2023. The tournament is the first ATP Masters 1000 Series event of the year and the third WTA 1000 Series event for the women.

This will be the 50th edition of the men’s event and 35th of the women’s event.

Is Rafael Nadal playing in Indian Wells?

No. The former world No 1 had planned to but after playing an exhibition with Carlos Alcaraz in Los Angeles and practising on site, Nadal said he was not ready to test himself against the world’s best in a competition like Indian Wells. The 37-year-old, who missed most of 2023 with a hip injury before returning in Brisbane at the start of 2024, is now targeting the clay-court season.

Carlos Alcaraz and Elena Rybakina are the defending champions at the tournament.

Alcaraz defeated Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, 6-3, 6-2 to win the men’s singles title in 2023 while Rybakina beat Aryna Sabalenka 7-6 (13-11), 6-4 to win the women’s singles title.

The men’s doubles event was Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden while Barbora Krejcikova / Katerina Siniakova won the women’s doubles title.

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are the most successful players on the men’s side at Indian Wells, with both players winning the title on five occasions each. The women’s event, which began only in 1989, has not yet seen a three-time champion. The players who have won the tournament twice include Martina Navratilova, Mary Joe Fernandez, Steffi Graf, Lindsay Davenport, Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters, Daniela Hantuchova, Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka.

Which players have been awarded wild cards for the 2024 BNP Paribas Open?

Former Grand Slam winners Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki and Emma Raducanu are among the women who have received wild cards into this year’s event. Others include former world No 1 and two-time Grand Slam finalist Karolina Pliskova, former world No 2 and 2021 BNP Paribas Open Champion Paula Badosa, and Americans Amanda Anisimova, Ashlyn Krueger and McCartney Kessler.

Which top players are missing from Indian Wells?

While most of the top players are all confirmed to play as of now, some notable names on the women’s side have pulled out. Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Belinda Bencic will be missing as they both are pregnant while 2023 French Open runner-up Karolina Muchova is out due to injury.

What is the prize money offered at the 2024 BNP Paribas Open?

Indian Wells will offer a total of $19 million in prize money, which is the most of any combined WTA and ATP Masters 1000 event.

This is an increase of more than $1.4 million from the previous year.
