Qualifier Heather Watson defeated Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 9 seed, 6-3, 7-5 to reach the second round of the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open at the International Tennis Centre, Zayed Sports City on Tuesday afternoon.
Watson, ranked No 156, will play Spanish lucky loser Cristina Bucsa next.
