Mumbai Open: Indian wildcard Rutuja Bhosale moves into second round
She will face the winner of the match between American Katie Volynets, the No 8 seed, and Indian wildcard Ankita Raina in the next round
Local wildcard Rutuja Bhosale reached the second round of the Mumbai Open by winning against Thai qualifier Peangtarn Plipuech 6-4, 7-5 at the Cricket Club of India on Tuesday.
Bhosale, ranked No 346 in the world, led 6-4, 5-3 and held two match points on her opponent’s serve before the Thai woman fought back to 5-5.
The Indian managed to break once again and then served out the match 6-4, 7-5 to improve to 2-0 lifetime against Plipuech.
Bhosale moves into the second round where she will play the winner of the match between American Katie Volynets, the No 8 seed, and Indian wildcard Ankita Raina next.
Bhosale, who twisted her ankle while heading for practice on Monday, did not seem to have trouble with her ankle which she said had swollen up the previous day. The Indian won the Asian Games gold medal in mixed doubles with current world No 1 in men’s doubles Rohan Bopanna last year.
