Australian Open: Oceane Dodin moves into last 16
Oceane Dodin beat Clara Burel 6-2, 6-4 on Saturday night and will play the winner of the match between No 12 seed Qinwen Zheng and Yafan Wang in the next round
Oceane Dodin won an all-French battle against Clara Burel 6-2, 6-4 to reach the last 16 of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Saturday night.
Dodin, ranked No 95, will face the winner of the match between No 12 seed Qinwen Zheng and Yafan Wang next.
Dodin features in a wide open quarter of the draw that is without a top 10 seed.
Neither player had ever been to the third round of a major before, but it was Dodin who took charge, hitting 27 winners and earning 11 break points of which she converted five. Dodin cracked five return winners and won 17 of 29 second-serve return points to defeat her compatriot in 74 minutes.
In a match that consisted primarily of short points, Dodin won 43 of 73 points that lasted four strokes or less. Only eight points in the match lasted nine or more shots.
Oceane Dodin defeated Chinese Lin Zhu, the No 29 seed (6-4, 6-3) and Italian Martina Trevisan (6-4, 6-4) in the previous rounds.
Earlier in the tournament, Burel, ranked No 51, beat Serb Aleksandra Krunic (6-4, 6-1) and American Jessica Pegula, the No 5 seed (6-4, 6-2).
