Australian Open: Alcaraz battles past spirited Sonego to reach third round
Carlos Alcaraz edged out Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 7-6 (3) and will play the winner of the match between Sumit Nagal and Juncheng Shang next
Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the second seed, reached the third round of the Australian Open by edging out Italian Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 7-6 (3) at Melbourne Park.
The world No 2 was made to work hard on Rod Laver Arena as Sonego showcased his own credentials as a bright young talent of the sport.
The Italian levelled the match up by winning the second set tiebreak after tireless work to chase down Alcaraz’s blistering groundstrokes.
Alcaraz regained control in the third but was again made to work hard in the fourth, finally taking the win on a tiebreak to reach the third round of the Australian Open for just the second time in his young but already glittering career.
He will play the winner of the match between Indian qualifier Sumit Nagal and Chinese wildcard Juncheng Shang next.
In the previous round, the 20-year-old Spaniard won against Frenchman Richard Gasquet (7-6 (5), 6-1, 6-2).
Sonego, ranked No 46, edged out Daniel Evans (4-6, 7-6 (8), 6-2, 7-6 (4)) in the first round.
