Australian Open: Tsitsipas comes through testing encounter against Thompson to reach third round

Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 7 seed, edged out Australian Jordan Thompson 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2, 7-6 (4) to move into the third round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park.

Tsitsipas, ranked No 7, will play Frenchman Luca Van Assche next.

“I really executed my game plan tremendously and at the highest peak on the tiebreak, and I was able to keep it going on a very nice flow for me, especially when I got the early mini break in the tiebreaker. I really felt that inner power come out. It really showed in the next few points,” Tsitsipas said in his post-match press conference.

In the previous round, the Greek beat Belgian lucky loser Zizou Bergs (5-7, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3).

Thompson, ranked No 47, won against Aleksandar Vukic (3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2, 3-6, 6-4) in the first round.
