Australian Open: Shelton reaches third round

American Ben Shelton, the No 16 seed, advanced to the third round of the Australian Open by edging out Australian Christopher O’Connell 6-4, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (5) at Melbourne Park on Wednesday night.

Shelton, ranked No 16, will play the winner of the match between Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, the No 20 seed, and Spaniard Jaume Munar next.

The American shrugged off the ongoing debate around his run-in with Novak Djokovic at last year’s US Open to make further progress.

The 21-year-old American won against Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut (6-2, 7-6 (2), 7-5) ahead of his victory.

In the previous round, O’Connell, ranked No 68, defeated Chilean Cristian Garin (3-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5).
