Swiss Indoors: Auger-Aliassime reaches first semi-final since February, meets Rune next
The Canadian edged out Alexander Shevchenko 7-6 (2), 3-6, 7-6 (1) on Friday to reach his second semi-final of 2023
Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 6 seed, edged out Russian qualifier Alexander Shevchenko 7-6 (2), 3-6, 7-6 (1) to move into the semi-finals of the Swiss Indoors at the Halle Saint-Jacques in Basel on Friday.
The world No 19, who is the defending champion this week, is through to his first semi-final on the tour since Doha in February and only the second of the year for him.
Rune leads head-to-head against Auger-Aliassime by 2-1
The Canadian defeated Swiss wildcard Leandro Riedi (6-3, 6-2) and Dutch qualifier Botic van de Zandschulp (6-4, 6-2) ahead of his win on Friday. Auger-Aliassime will face Dane Holger Rune, the top seed, next.
The Canadian beat Rune in the final here last year but since then the Dane has scored two wins over Auger-Aliassime including in Beijing last month.
Earlier in the week, Shevchenko, ranked No 83, won against Swiss Stan Wawrinka (6-3, 7-6 (8)) and edged out American Taylor Fritz, the No 3 seed (6-7 (7), 7-6 (6), 7-6 (5)).
