Seventh seed Katie Volynets defeated Hailey Baptiste 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the last eight of the Tampico Open at the Centro Libanés Mexicano de Tampico on Thursday.
Volynets, ranked No 108 in the world, will play Russian Anna Kalinskaya, the No 4 seed, for a spot in the semi-finals.
The American won against Mexican wildcard Ana Sofia Sanchez (6-1, 6-2) ahead of her win. In the previous round of the tournament, Baptiste, ranked No 136, edged out Katrina Scott (6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-4).
