Korea Open: Liu upsets seventh seed Rus to move into last eight
The American wil play the winner of the match between top seed Jessica Pegula and Ashlyn Krueger in the next round
American Claire Liu moved into the last eight of the Hana Bank Korea Open when Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus, the No 7 seed, retired during their second round match on Wednesday.
Liu, ranked No 98 in the world, led 1-6, 6-3, 3-0 when Rus, ranked No 51, pulled out of the match in Seoul. This will be Liu’s first WTA level quarter-final on hard courts in more than a year.
The American will play the winner of the match between top seed Jessica Pegula and Ashlyn Krueger next.
Claire Liu defeated qualifier Yeonwoo Ku (6-3, 6-3) in her first round match while the Dutchwoman won against wildcard Na-Lae Han (6-1, 6-3).
