China Open: Dimitrov impresses in classy win over Rune, makes the quarter-finals
Grigor Dimitrov won against Holger Rune 6-3, 7-5 and will play Italian Jannik Sinner, the No 6 seed, in the next round
Grigor Dimitrov has reached the quarter-finals of the China Open courtesy of an impressive 6-3, 7-5 win over Holger Rune at the Olympic Green Tennis Center in Beijing.
The Bulgarian looked sharp throughout the contest, frequently using his wide variety of shots to pull Rune around the court before pulling the trigger with well-timed and powerful forehand winners.
The Dane was not at his best, but his performance was another step in the right direction following a difficult US hard-court campaign during which he compiled an unenviable five-match losing streak. He has broken that run with a with over Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round, but was unable to get past an inspired Grigor Dimitrov.
Dimitrov, ranked No 19, will play Italian Jannik Sinner, the No 6 seed, next.
Ahead of his victory, the Bulgarian won against American wildcard Mackenzie McDonald (2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1).
