“She refused to lose” – Patrick Mouratoglou on new US Open champion Coco Gauff
Patrick Mouratoglou has seen a big alteration in Coco Gauff’s attitude
Coach Patrick Mouratoglou couldn’t have been more delighted to see someone he knows well lift her maiden Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open.
And he has noticed a real change in Coco Gauff‘s attitude and confidence in recent months.
“The big difference that I see between the Coco of before and the Coco of today is that she’s mentally more calm,” he said.
“She matured so much in the last two months. I’ve seen some big changes in her attitude on the court, and her attitude is just a consequence of how you feel inside.”
He pinpointed as crucial her round of16 match in Flushing Meadows against Caroline Wozniacki; the American had lost the second set and the opening game of the third.
“I could see, because I know her very well, and I think it was obvious, the panic taking her completely – and from one point to the other, literally, she started to play unbelievable. She refused to lose.”
Following that match, the next set she dropped was in the final against Aryna Sabalenka.
