American qualifier Emma Navarro won against Italian Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 6-0 to move into the last 16 of the Cymbiotika San Diego Open on Monday night.

Navarro, ranked No 61, had a strong night on return, winning more than half of Paolini’s first serve points, and 60 percent of second serve returns as well. While the opening set was tight with five breaks of serve seeing Navarro win 7-5, the second set was far more one-sided, with the American breaking three times and defending both break points on her own serve.

The qualifier will now play the winner of the match between Belarusian qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Swiss Belinda Bencic, the No 5 seed, next.
