Serb Novak Djokovic, the second seed, moved into the final of the US Open by defeating American Ben Shelton 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (4) at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York on Friday evening.
Djokovic, ranked No 2, will face the winner of the match between Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the top seed, and Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 3 seed, next.
The 36-year-old Serb won against Frenchman Alexandre Muller (6-0, 6-2, 6-3), Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles (6-4, 6-1, 6-1), No 32 seed Laslo Djere (4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3), Croat qualifier Borna Gojo (6-2, 7-5, 6-4) and American Taylor Fritz, the No 9 seed (6-1, 6-4, 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds of the Flushing Meadows tournament, Shelton, ranked No 47, won against Argentinian Pedro Cachin (1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4), Austrian Dominic Thiem (7-6 (1), 1-0 ret.), Russian Aslan Karatsev (6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0), No 14 seed Tommy Paul (6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4) and No 10 seed Frances Tiafoe (6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2).
