Alert US Open: Gauff dispatches Ostapenko to book spot in semi-finals
Coco Gauff won against Jelena Ostapenko (6-0, 6-2) on Tuesday.
American Coco Gauff, the No 6 seed, lost just two games on Tuesday against Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No. 20 seed (6-0, 6-2), who had beaten Iga Swiatek. Gauff will now play her first ever US Open semi-finals.
Gauff, ranked No 6, will face the winner of the match between Romanian Sorana Cirstea, the No 30 seed, and No 10 seed Karolina Muchova next.
The 19-year-old American beat German qualifier Laura Siegemund (3-6, 6-2, 6-4), Russian Mirra Andreeva (6-3, 6-2), Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 32 seed (3-6, 6-3, 6-0) and Dane wildcard Caroline Wozniacki (6-3, 3-6, 6-1) in the previous rounds of the Flushing Meadow tournament.
Earlier in the tournament, Ostapenko, ranked No 21, defeated Italian Jasmine Paolini (6-2, 4-6, 6-1), Russian Elina Avanesyan (6-3, 5-7, 7-5), American Bernarda Pera (4-6, 6-3, 6-3) and Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed (3-6, 6-3, 6-1).
