Chicago Women’s Open: Tomova powers past Bronzetti to book final against Liu
Viktoriya Tomova defeated Lucia Bronzetti 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-1 on Friday afternoon and will face American Claire Liu for the title
In a dominant third set display, Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova has knocked out an in-form Italian Lucia Bronzetti, the No 5 seed, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-1 to move into the final of the Chicago Women’s Open on Friday afternoon.
Tomova, ranked No 104, will face American Claire Liu next, who was gifted a spot in the final after Cristina Bucsa retired three games into their semi-final.
The Bulgarian won against American lucky loser Adesuwa Osabuohien (6-0, 6-0), Frenchwoman Alize Cornet, the No 4 seed (6-4, 7-6 (5)) and Russian Kamilla Rakhimova, the No 8 seed (7-5, 4-6, 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds, Bronzetti, ranked No 82, won against Canadian Rebecca Marino (7-6 (4), 6-1), American Quinn Gleason (7-6 (2), 6-2) and Ukrainian Kateryna Baindl (W/O).
