Tennis in the Land: Maria through to semi-finals, gets past wild card Fernandez

German Tatjana Maria won against Canadian wildcard Leylah Fernandez 6-3, 6-2 to reach the last 4 of the Tennis in the Land at Cleveland’s Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica in Flats West Bank on Thursday night.

Maria, ranked No 49, will play the winner of the match between American Sloane Stephens, the No 9 seed, and Spanish lucky loser Sara Sorribes Tormo next.

The 36-year-old German beat Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva (6-2, 2-6, 6-1) and Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, the No 5 seed (W/O) earlier in the tournament.

In the previous rounds, Fernandez, ranked No 72, defeated Linda Noskova (6-0, 6-2) and Dane lucky loser Clara Tauson (6-0 ret.).
