Wawrinka beats Tiafoe in straight sets to reach last 16 at Cincinnati Masters
It was a vintage Stan Wawrinka performance on Wednesday in Cincinnati, as the 38-year-old bested Frances Tiafoe in straight sets. A surprising third-round showdown with Max Purcell is next.
Swiss wild card Stan Wawrinka advanced to the last 16 of the Western & Southern Open by beating American Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 6-4 at the Linder Tennis Family Center on Thursday night.
Wawrinka, ranked No 51, will face Australian qualifier Max Purcell next.
The 38-year-old Swiss has been a bear for the host nation so far this week. Prior to defeating Tiafoe he took out American wild card Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3 in the previous round.
During the first round of the Cincy Open, Tiafoe — ranked No 10 — edged out Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-4.
