American qualifier Marcos Giron pulled the upset on Wednesday by beating Dane Holger Rune, the No 5 seed, in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 6-3).
Giron, ranked No 70, will now try to reach the quarter-finals by finding a way through American Tommy Paul, the No 12 seed, next. It’s the second time that the American gets the best out of Rune, after his win last year in the first round of Wimbledon (6-3, 7-5, 6-4). Giron had previously lost his past 13 battles against Top 10 players.
In the previous round of the Canadian Open, the American beat Finn Emil Ruusuvuori (7-6 (4), 7-6 (6)).
