Citi Open: Shang sets tantalising rematch with Shelton in second round
Juncheng Shang won against Emilio Gomez 6-3, 6-3 on Monday evening and will play No 14 seed Ben Shelton in the next round
Chinese qualifier Juncheng Shang moved into the second round of the Citi Open by defeating Ecuadorian Emilio Gomez 6-3, 6-3 at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center in Washington on Monday evening.
In a clash between youth and experience, 18-year-old Shang needed less than an hour and a half to dispatch 31-year-old Gomez in straight sets. The teen played impeccable tennis, striking 10 winners and no unforced errors across the course of the match.
His win sets up a tantalising rematch against No 14 seed Ben Shelton, who the world No 149 defeated last week at the Atlanta Open, in what was only his second main draw win of his career.
