The German defeated Argentinian Pedro Cachin (6-2, 6-1) and Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the top seed (6-4, 3-6, 6-2) ahead of his victory.
The defeat confirmed Lopez’s retirement, and he was congratulated on his career by Rafael Nadal via video message.
“I want to congratulate you for the career you have done,” he said in Spanish in quotes translated by Tennis Majors. “It has a lot of merit what you did. Thank you for always being a good partner all this time.”
Lopez said in his own speech: “I never thought this moment would come. I want to thank the tournament for allowing me to retire in my country. I have always tried to do my best to make the fans happy. Thank you all for being here today. My father was the crazy guy who started all this. He put a racquet in my hands and look how it ended. I want to thank him.”
