American Ashlyn Krueger won the Veneto Open final by edging out German Tatjana Maria, the top seed, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 at the Tennis Club Gaiba on Sunday.
Krueger, ranked No 143, defeated Slovenian Dalila Jakupovic (6-3, 6-2), Katie Swan (6-3, 4-6, 5-5 ret.), Italian Lucrezia Stefanini, the No 7 seed (6-2, 6-1) and Robin Montgomery (6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2) ahead of her victory.
In the previous rounds of the Gaiba tournament, Maria, ranked No 66, beat Swiss Ylena In-Albon (6-3, 6-4), Italian wildcard Lisa Pigato (6-3, 6-3), Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, the No 8 seed (6-3, 7-5) and Serb Olga Danilovic, the No 4 seed (6-1, 6-3).
