‘Wimbledon wild card? Are you serious?!’ No grass court season plans for Pavlyuchenkova

You won’t be seeing Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on a grass court this summer.

Her protected ranking allowed her to enter two Grand Slams, with Roland-Garros being the second of them. Wimbledon’s direct entry list would be based on her previous low ranking while she was out through injury.

And despite a reporter’s spirited suggestion that she could ask for a wild card, she laughed it off.

“Are you serious? Do you think after the situation last year they would give me a wild card this year?” she asked, referring to the tournament’s ban on Russian and Belarusian players in 2022 after the invasion of Ukraine.

“I can try and ask. Actually, you’re right, thank you. I will try and ask, and I’ll let you know in the next press conference. Fingers crossed.”

Her decision to use her protected ranking in Paris seems a good one. The Slam where she was runner-up two years ago, she now returns to the quarter-finals following her 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over Elise Mertens.
