Roland-Garros: Varillas defeats Hurkacz for biggest win of career, faces Djokovic in last 16

It is the biggest win of his career: Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas got past Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 13 seed, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-2 to reach the last 16 of Roland-Garros in Paris on Friday.

Currently the world No 94, the Peruvian has never yet been ranked higher than the 76th in the world he achieved earlier this year.

And however far he goes in Paris this year, he has already secured his best-ever run at a Grand Slam.

He is the first man from Peru to reach the fourth round at Roland-Garros since Jamie Yzaga in 1994.

It gets no easier in the next round as Varillas will face Serb Novak Djokovic, the No 3 seed, next.

Earlier in the tournament, the Peruvian pulled off a miraculous comeback to beat Chinese qualifier Juncheng Shang (4-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1) and Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, the No 19 seed (1-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1).

Hurkacz, ranked No 14, beat Belgian David Goffin (6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4) and Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor (6-3, 5-7, 6-7 (13), 7-6 (5), 6-4) in the previous rounds.
