Jannik Sinner’s clay season will be a shorter one than scheduled. The Italian, semi-finalist in Monte-Carlo, is now out of the Masters 1000 in Madrid following his withdrawal from his quarter-final in Barcelona due to illness.
Sinner has had a very successful year so far with a title in Montpellier, a final in Rotterdam, a semi-final in Indian Wells, and a final in Miami. But that apparent flu he has gotten in Spain is messing up with his lead-up to Roland-Garros. Before Paris, his other main target is obviously the Masters 1000 in Rome that will follow Madrid. So now let’s see if he can make it there.
But for now, it’s Madrid that’s having a rough time after losing one more top player following the news that both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were not able to compete this year. The 2023 clay season is really starting to look a bit shaky at the top.
