Indian Wells: Cirstea upsets Garcia to reach quarter-finals, meets Swiatek next
The Romanian defeated fifth seed Caroline Garcia 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in a tense fourth round battle
Romanian Sorana Cirstea moved into the last eight of Indian Wells by edging out Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 5 seed, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 on Tuesday.
Cirstea, ranked No 83, will play world No 1 and defending champion Iga Swiatek next.
The Romanian won against Australian qualifier Kimberly Birrell (6-3, 6-2), American Madison Keys, the No 19 seed (6-1 ret.) and American Bernarda Pera (6-3, 6-1) in the previous rounds of the tournament.
Earlier in the week, Garcia, ranked No 5, edged out Hungarian lucky loser Dalma Galfi (6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-4) and defeated Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 30 seed (6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1).
