Mexico’s top players to skip Davis Cup tie due to differences with their Federation

Players cite lack of communication, lack of planning and lack of interest from the Federation’s side as reasons for skipping the tie

The leading tennis players from Mexico have come together and decided to skip this week’s Davis Cup World Group playoff tie against Taiwan due to differences with the Mexican Tennis Federation (FMT). The tie will take place on February 4 and 5 in Metepec, State of Mexico.

The players who are skipping the tie include Santiago Gonzalez, Alejandro Hernandez and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela.

In a joint statement released, the players said, “After a difficult deliberation, we have not reached a positive conclusion, so we have decided not to participate in the upcoming series against the Chinese Taipei team. The lack of communication, lack of planning and lack of interest show that the situation has not been handled in the right way and that personal interests have taken precedence over sporting ones. It is sad that the FMT does not have the minimum standards in dealing and planning with the best national representatives.”

Besides Gonzalez, Hernandez and Angel Reyes-Varela, the statement was also signed by Ernesto Escobedo, Lucas Gomez, Hans Hach, Gerardo Lopez, and Manuel Sanchez.

The FMT announced the team that will play on Tuesday, which now includes Alan Rubio, Cesar Ramirez, Isaac Arevalo, Mario Alberto Duron, Luciano Alcocer and Armando Sotelo.
