Shelton ends Popyrin dream to make last 16

American Ben Shelton won against Australian wildcard Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-4 to move into the last 16 of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Saturday.

Shelton, ranked No 89, will face J.J. Wolf next.

Earlier in the tournament, the 20-year-old American beat Chinese Zhizhen Zhang (4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4)) and Chilean qualifier Nicolas Jarry (7-6 (3), 7-6 (3), 7-5).

Popyrin, ranked No 113, won against Chun-Hsin Tseng (4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-1) and American Taylor Fritz, the No 8 seed (6-7 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-2) in the previous rounds.
