Netflix curse hits Tiafoe as Khachanov reaches last 16

Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 18 seed, edged out American Frances Tiafoe, the No 16 seed, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (9) to move into the last 16 of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Friday.

Khachanov, ranked No 20, will face Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka, the No 31 seed, next.

Ahead of his victory, the Russian won against Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles (7-6 (3), 6-2, 6-0) and Australian wildcard Jason Kubler (6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2).

Tiafoe, ranked No 17, edged out German Daniel Altmaier (6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (6)) and defeated Chinese qualifier Juncheng Shang (6-4, 6-4, 6-1) earlier in the tournament.
