Australian Open: Auger-Aliassime through to fourth round for third year running
The Canadian will meet the winner of the match between No 11 seed Cameron Norrie and Czech Jiri Lehecka in the next round
Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No 6 seed, moved into the last 16 of the Australian Open for the third year in a row with a four-set win over Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 28 seed.
Auger-Aliassime needed two hours and 36 minutes to beat Cerundolo 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 at Melbourne Park on Friday.
Auger-Aliassime, who reached the quarter-finals here last year, will play the winner of the match between No 11 seed Cam Norrie and Czech Jiri Lehecka next.
Ahead of his victory, the 22-year-old Canadian had beaten Vasek Pospisil (1-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3), 6-3) and rallied to beat Slovak Alex Molcan (3-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2).
Cerundolo, ranked No 29, had scored wins over Guido Pella (6-4, 6-4, 6-3) and Frenchman Corentin Moutet (3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 7-5) earlier in the week.
“Yes, I do feel like it’s getting better. Today was a good start, so I’m happy with the way I stepped out on the court. I was playing my best tennis. After, of course, there’s going to be a reaction from the opponent, which is normal. I’m happy that overall I found a good level today. It’s positive for what’s to come.”
