Venus Williams has withdrawn from the 2023 Australian Open due to an as-yet-undisclosed injury.
The seven-time Grand Slam champion was last month awarded a wild card for the tournament, and it was set to be her 22nd appearance there.
The 42-year-old had begun her season with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over Katie Volynets in Auckland, but lost in the next round to Zhu Lin 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.
She has reached the Australian Open final twice, in 2003 and 2017, won the women’s doubles crown four times, in 2001, 2003, 2009 and 2010 with her sister Serena, and won the mixed doubles title in 1998 with Justin Gimelstob.
