WTA Rankings: Swiatek ends with second-highest year-end total; Garcia climbs to No 4

Poland’s Iga Swiatek ends the 2022 season at the top of the WTA rankings with the second highest year-end rankings tally in WTA history behind Serena Williams (in 2013).

Swiatek, who was ousted in the semi-finals of the season-ending WTA Finals in Fort Worth, finishes with 11,085 points. That’s second to only Serena Williams’ 2013 year-end tally of 13,260 points.

The Pole’s haul, aided by two Grand Slam titles and a mid-season 37-match winning streak, is also the second highest ever by any player at any time in the WTA rankings history – the highest being Serena Williams’ tally of 13,615 points in June 2013.

Garcia back in top 5 of WTA rankings after Fort Worth triumph

France’s Caroline Garcia, who was ranked No 79 in the world at the time of Roland-Garros, finishes the season as world No 4 after winning the biggest title of her career, the WTA Finals, on Monday night. This equals her career-best ranking which she first achieved in September 2018.

Tennis Majors

One Jabeur and Jessica Pegula finish the season as world No 2 and world No 3 respectively while WTA Finals runner-up Aryna Sabalenka moves up two spots to No 5. The Belarusian started the year at No 2 but despite some struggles, she ended the yar on a strong note.

Greece’s Maria Sakkari is at No 6, making her one of only four women from last year’sseason-ending top 10 to make the cut in 2022 as well, the others being Swiatek, Jabeur and Sabalenka.

American teen Coco Gauff drops to No 7 this week, followed by Daria Kasatkina at No 8, Veronika Kudermetova at No 9 and Simona Halep at No 10.
