Paris Masters: Musetti upsets Ruud to reach first Masters 1000 quarter-final
Lorenzo Musetti upset Casper Ruud 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday and will face the winner of the match between Serb Novak Djokovic, the No 6 seed, and Russian Karen Khachanov in the next round
Italian Lorenzo Musetti upset third seed Casper Ruud 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to move into the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters at the Accor Arena on Thursday.
It was Musetti’s first win against a top 5 player and means he’ll be in his first Masters 1000 quarter-final. The Italian will now play the winner of the match between Serb Novak Djokovic, the No 6 seed, and Russian Karen Khachanov.
“He was playing really good and I think I had to play my best tennis to beat him,” Musetti told the reporters. “I started a bit with a rush, but Casper was playing good. He played good all the match, so it was definitely one of my biggest win in my career. I’m really proud of myself today.”
The 20-year-old Italian won against Croat Marin Čilić, the No 15 seed (6-4, 6-4) and Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili (6-4, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous round, Ruud, ranked No 4, defeated French wildcard Richard Gasquet (6-1, 7-6 (7)).
